John, I wish the best for you. But when I read your work, I always feel like I am reading a cooler version of GQ than what is actually out there. Power to you, I think you’ve got a lot going for you, and I’m always happy to read you :)
Anyone would be lucky to have you on their team, John. Your creativity, wit, and ingenuity has inspired me for more years than I can count. Excited to follow your next moves--no doubt in my mind you'll come out on top.
Saw your post on my feed. I recently started substack as an outlet to document about me being laid off (I left 6 months ago) and other random thoughts that I have. And I resonate so much about what you have just written above. In my 40s and this period is just tough. We went through asian financial crisis on this side of the world and this environment feels worse than that :(
I wish you all the best and hope that we both come out of this period stronger.
I have been going through something very similar—my daughter was born 1/1. I've been getting increasingly frustrated with the market, and I can't even write about it nearly as eloquently as you! Wishing you the best of luck in both the search and parenting.
so sorry you’ve had to go thru this rigmarole the past few months as you prepared to welcome your child into the world. I’m earlier in my career & was laid off a couple of months ago—it’s validating to hear that this *is* like ‘08. wishing u all the best
As someone in the same position, though it’s been longer for me, it can be disheartening and also leave you feeling as though all that you’ve done hasn’t amounted too much. But you have to keep pushing, make something for yourself too while you have this additional time. I know it’s hard with a family but we owe it to ourselves to not give up.
I’m in a very similar position right now. I was laid off from an editorial leadership job at a well-known digital publication in December and have been actively applying to jobs (and working with my large network) since January. Four applications resulted in interviews and I got fairly far along in all of them, just to get rejected.
It’s tough to stay positive in this environment so I really empathize with you. Hang in there and I hope good news is right around the corner for you!
Hi- I went through something similar having a baby last year in March, needing to leave nyc due to rising costs & childcare, lack of help etc, relocated then told I wasn’t allowed to work remote. Long story short, I had to scramble to find a job in August ‘24 with a 4 month old and postpartum depression as the sole earner for my family with nothing to fall back on. It’s been quite the ride! The hiring system is completely fucking broken right now. If you are still reading this comment, DM me and I’ll give you my email. There’s a CD role open at my company in the NYC office - I’m in Philly. It’s pharma, but a good company to work for. I think everyone needs to help each other out. I’m an art supervisor btw.
OMG! I've been on a two-year job search, only getting by on disability and sparse freelance gigs. If you can't get a job, John, what hope is there for the rest of us?!!
I’ve applied for 150+ marketing/journalism jobs since I lost my job in Jan. and I’ve had 3 interviews (and did not get those positions) and it just feels so brutal rn. (And I only have the options to work remotely or risk moving for a job in a recession, which didn’t work out for me last time.)
Best of luck in your job search! This piece really resonated with me. I graduated last June and have really struggled to find a full time job. It seems like nobody is finding anything, regardless of experience.
You tell me your NDA story and I'll tell you mine.

John Jacuzzi is a terrible thing to waste. You're going to find something spectacular. EGV
